How the Levels Work
Each benchmark is categorized into five levels based on community performance data and competitive standards:
Elite (Top 5%)
Regional/Games-level athlete. You could realistically compete at Quarterfinals or beyond. Very few athletes reach this level across all categories.
Advanced (Top 25%)
Strong competitor at your gym. You Rx most workouts comfortably and can handle heavier Open workouts. Likely top 25% in the Open.
Intermediate (Top 50%)
Solid CrossFitter with 1-3 years of consistent training. You can Rx most WODs but may struggle with heavy barbell or advanced gymnastics.
Beginner (Top 75%)
Building your foundation. You know the movements and are developing capacity. The biggest gains of your CrossFit career are ahead of you.
The Benchmark WODs Explained
Fran
21-15-9 Thrusters (95/65 lbs) & Pull-ups. The most famous CrossFit workout. Tests your ability to push through ascending fatigue with a light barbell and high-rep gymnastics. Sub-3:00 is elite; sub-5:00 is very competitive.
Grace
30 Clean & Jerks for time (135/95 lbs). A pure barbell power test. Your score is heavily influenced by your Olympic lifting technique. Sub-2:00 is elite; sub-3:00 is strong.
Helen
3 Rounds: 400m Run, 21 Kettlebell Swings (53/35), 12 Pull-ups. Tests the classic CrossFit combination of monostructural cardio, hip hinge power, and pulling strength. Sub-8:00 is elite.
Murph
1 Mile Run, 100 Pull-ups, 200 Push-ups, 300 Squats, 1 Mile Run (with 20/14 lb vest). The ultimate test of bodyweight endurance. Performed on Memorial Day. Sub-35:00 with a vest is elite territory.
